The safety listing
A heating pad inside an outdoor shelter runs for months in damp conditions, often chewed, often sat on. An independent listing — MET, UL or ETL — means a laboratory tested the pad against a recognised standard. "Safe design", "overheat protection" and similar phrases in a listing are the manufacturer's own claim. Check the product page for the listing body and its number; if neither appears, treat it as unlisted.
Why bigger is colder
These shelters have no heat source other than the pad and the cat. A large interior gives the cat more air to warm and more surface to lose it through. A shelter sized for two cats, used by one, can stay colder than a smaller one with no pad at all. Size to the number of cats that will actually sleep there — and if a colony shares the space, buy the wide version rather than a second-hand-me-down.
Two exits, not one
A cat that enters a single-door shelter has no escape if something blocks the entrance. Every shelter worth buying has a second opening, ideally an exit-only flap. This is not a convenience feature, and it is the first thing to check.
Insulation, elevation and the roof
- Insulation: double walls with an air cavity, or foam panels. Waterproof fabric alone is not insulation.
- Elevation: a few inches off the ground keeps out snowmelt and ground cold — the single biggest cause of a wet shelter.
- Roof overhang: keeps rain out of the doorway, which is where water actually gets in.
- Bedding: straw, not blankets or hay. Blankets absorb moisture and freeze; straw does not.
Power, safely
Use an outdoor-rated extension lead with a GFCI outlet, route the cable so it cannot sit in standing water, and check the cord for chew damage every few weeks. A pad with a low-voltage cord and chew resistance is worth the premium outdoors.
